Carol propped herself on her arms, sighing. “Just as well she never found out about Lee. She’d’ve kicked up a huge fuss and been dismissed for stepping out of line.”
“Gary the Goat would’ve sued her.”
“And he and his mates would’ve been heroes. With Lee branded the town bike.” She gazed across the expanse of green towards the camphor laurel trees fringing the creek at the end of Castle Street. “It’s so bloody unfair.”
Karen nodded. “We’re second-class citizens. Heaps of parents were glad when Mrs Thoms was moved on. Telling girls to stick up for themselves and demand equal rights is fine in theory. In practice it’s asking for trouble.”
