“Might work. For a while.” Karen grinned, easing her grip on her school bag and swapping hands. “You’re full of zip this morning. Ready to tackle Bruiser Brewer in the Jetty Gaol?”

“Uhuh.. I solved those velocity functions. I…” Carol stared at the horizon. “I had a…weird experience. Sort of came back to reality. I haven’t been much of a friend the last few months.”

“You had a rotten thing happen.” Karen patted her shoulder. “We’ve been mates for six years, Caro. That’s too long for a few months to make a difference. And Nel probably didn’t even notice. She’s so lightweight, she’ll float herself into trouble one day. Eyes open, brain switched off. Flutters along in the breeze.” Karen thinned her lips in a wry grin. “And if you want a story spread, tell Nel. She doesn’t mean to gossip; she just opens her mouth.”
