“What? Until I marry? This isn’t the 19th century!” She gaped at him, and he returned her stare unblinking. “You’re joking, right? Pay-back for that blind snake?”

“Were that the case, pretending guardianship wouldn’t be the retribution I’d choose.” Mark tweaked his tie, green eyes gleaming. “It’s a testamentary trust. As soon as probate’s granted it will own the assets and you will receive an income from the Trust.” He selected two sheets of paper and laid these on the table. “The trust continues until marriage or death. In the case of the former, you come into ownership of what you’ve inherited. Were you to die unwed, the income passes to your children if you name them in your Will or to other relatives.”

“This is a farce. If I never marry, I don’t inherit?” Carol blinked, eyebrows straightened. I’m penniless. Or is that powerless?
